If we know where we came from, we may better know where to go. If we know who we came from we may better understand who we are.
Our story begins in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, where James Ritchie, one of five brothers who immigrated from England in 1768, moved after fighting in the American Revolutionary War. In 1869, Balis Wilmer Ritchie was born into the Ritchie clan in Knott County, Kentucky. In 1895, he married Abigail Hall, and they settled down, first on Clear Creek in Knott County, and then for a few years in in Hindman, Kentucky before moving to Viper, Kentucky in Perry County where they established a permanent residence. They had fourteen children, eleven girls and three boys.
Ritchie HistoryFamily history helps to keep memories alive and allows each generation to have an idea of who they are and where they come from.
